This is a report and photos by Neil Hulme posted on <a href="https://www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk/sightings/">https://www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk/sightings/</a><br />
<br />
"Fifteen intrepid explorers turned up for today's (20 May) BC Sussex 'Rare Species Landscape Walk', involving the ascent of Mount Heyshott (good views were had by all), a dip into Charlton Forest, and a circuit of the beautiful Graffham Down Trust reserves. We were out from 10.30 am until 4.30 pm and probably lost a few pounds, but the effort was well worthwhile. I know that others enjoyed it immensely, and for me this was the third in a sequence of truly memorable days out butterflying; already this is a May I'll cherish for a very long time. My thanks to all who attended, and to Will Langdon for keeping the tally (which once listed will go into our database), and for giving up his lunch break to help with the frenetic counting of Dukes! The highlights were undoubtedly 86 Duke of Burgundy and 19 Pearl-bordered Fritillary (we saw both species laying eggs). Other species included Dingy Skipper (very many), Grizzled Skipper (many), Orange-tip, Large White, Small White, Green-veined White, Brimstone, Speckled Wood, Small Heath, Red Admiral, Peacock, Comma, Green Hairstreak, Holly Blue, Brown Argus and Common Blue; a total of 18 species. The impressive flora included Fly Orchid (several dozen), White Helleborine (including a whopper) and a few Greater Butterfly Orchid. Will and I later returned to the slopes, to drink in the magic that Heyshott Escarpment provides at this time of year. Most of the Dukes had turned in for the night, but the Duchesses were now out in force. (Neil Hulme)"<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rain has disrupted some of our recent scheduled work parties on Wednesday mornings. Yesterday's work party was sunny and we had a full complement of volunteers working away on Heyshott escarpment clearing scrub and preparing the way for primulas and violets to burst through in the coming months. We are hopeful that the Pearl-bordered Fritillaries will appear again and share the Duke of Burgundy's success story. A buzzard soared over the hill and called while we worked.</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This morning I resumed work with the Murray Downland Trust
at Heyshott escarpment. This was the first work party of the year after last
week’s rain prevented the scheduled work party. The slope at the west side of the
main hill has been cleared of scrub and looks good for the primulas and violets
that we hope will attract the attention of the Duke of Burgundy and Pearl-bordered
Fritillary. The weather was excellent but the wet leaves and grass proved a challenge
for the fire meisters. Attendees were Butterfly Conservation members Paul, Garry and myself,
new volunteer Kay and MDT members John,
Mike H, Greg, Andy and Alan. We welcome new volunteers -</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Today we had our second work party of the year. Many have been cancelled due to either ice or wet conditions making work too hazardous. It was good to get stuck in again on the east slope. A shrew popped out of the undergrowth. We gathered around to see it, but it had disappeared into a hole at the base of a tree trunk. It reappeared briefly to tell us what it thought of our gardening efforts. A small birds nest was also found on the ground.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The past month has gone well - we only lost one Wednesday - on November 9th the slopes were too slippery after the previous night's rain. So far this year we have concentrated on clearing vegetation to create suitable habitat for the primroses and cowslips to appear as food plants for the Duke of Burgundy next Spring.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have volunteers performing various functions: starting and tending the fire, tree cutting using chainsaws and handsaws, cutting tall plant growth using brush cutters, dragging cut wood to the fire, raking and carrying cut brush to the fire using forks. The use of brush cutters and chainsaws requires specialist courses, certification and personal protection equipment so we have a limited number of volunteers who can use these tools. Some more volunteers will attend training courses soon to increase our specialist work force.</div>

Yesterday 13 volunteers climbed Heyshott escarpment to begin the new season's weekly clearance programme. Last year we had an excellent showing of the butterfly that this work is designed to benefit - the Duke of Burgundy.<br />
We welcome newcomers to our weekly work parties which are mostly held on Wednesday mornings. More information can be found here:<br />
<a href="http://www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk/volunteer/workingparties/heyshott.php">http://www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk/volunteer/workingparties/heyshott.php</a><br />
<br />
Heyshott is one of the great success stories of butterfly conservation in the UK and further information about the Duke of Burgundy and all the Sussex butterflies will be found in the new Butterfly Conservation Atlas of Sussex butterflies which will be published in 2017:-<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGMJyOnQxVWvH7o90KxXkNDxWGbHdc0WXi5cqlX3arjdqRRsRDcozOXdFOkY3YyTw0RboWoAcSjWN0hP06nsy9Xrf__-_Cv7e2Fcaw_imKsjTXW1WbJl0RHPYBkcLxY5ZOQ2Uk_6TxpRc/s1600/BC+Duke+pair+Heyshott+Escarpment+20.5.16.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGMJyOnQxVWvH7o90KxXkNDxWGbHdc0WXi5cqlX3arjdqRRsRDcozOXdFOkY3YyTw0RboWoAcSjWN0hP06nsy9Xrf__-_Cv7e2Fcaw_imKsjTXW1WbJl0RHPYBkcLxY5ZOQ2Uk_6TxpRc/s320/BC+Duke+pair+Heyshott+Escarpment+20.5.16.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
After delivering a butterfly identification and recording workshop for the South Downs Volunteer Ranger Service (VRS), held at the National Park Authority's offices in Midhurst (20.5.16), a large group of us headed to Heyshott Escarpment, to put theory into practice. I was assisted by Jayne Chapman (BC Hants Reserves Officer) and BC/VRS stalwart Arthur Greenwood. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As always, Heyshott risked giving an entirely false impression of the plight facing some of our rarer and more localised species. If one were to live entirely within the confines of the Murray Downland Trust's flagship reserve, it would be easy to think that all was well with the natural world. At one point I became genuinely concerned that people might tread on some of the Duke of Burgundies scattered liberally over the ground. It came as a relief to occasionally find a more common species on which the group could hone its identification skills, but for much of the time it was “Duke of Burgundy, Duke of Burgundy, Duke of Burgundy, Duke of Burgundy”.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
Having recently made an accurate count of 135 Dukes here (almost exclusively males - 129), and knowing the numbers usually encountered within each pit, it soon became obvious to me that I was looking at a larger population than I've ever experienced before. After our group had departed I returned to make a more accurate assessment, but time only allowed a rapid one-hour count over about one-third of the productive area. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS3zSEOGSV2bOrhL9QfX_JxAmrUYD3QGGl_pZEkb8c3OjzEzxm0OQYyjg_XQ2bTjTLnShW5-lw_j_g7hMKJMRGuCR_wLJHm0Q1jPHFZNzPnSnG0IuQaaz36YcgfVwCsZcjtWMnONA8ouk/s1600/BC+Duke+pair+Heyshott+Escarpment+%25282%2529+20.5.16.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS3zSEOGSV2bOrhL9QfX_JxAmrUYD3QGGl_pZEkb8c3OjzEzxm0OQYyjg_XQ2bTjTLnShW5-lw_j_g7hMKJMRGuCR_wLJHm0Q1jPHFZNzPnSnG0IuQaaz36YcgfVwCsZcjtWMnONA8ouk/s320/BC+Duke+pair+Heyshott+Escarpment+%25282%2529+20.5.16.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
Females were out in abundance today and I saw a total of five pairings without having to search very thoroughly. I also came across only my second ever example of the pale aberrant form leucodes (it looks rather like a very faded specimen but isn't!). It's been a very good season for aberrant Sussex Dukes, as I've had the pleasure of sharing two specimens of the rare ab. albomaculata (one including traits of the less remarkable ab. gracilens) with a few friends on another site.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Over some parts of the reserve which seldom support more than one or two Dukes, today there were many. At times the air was full of butterflies, with males chasing males, males chasing females, and males chasing Dingy Skippers and Green Hairstreaks. In several places I counted the number of individuals sitting within an imaginary one metre square, which reached eight in the most favoured hollow (5m, 3f), during a cool, dull spell. The last species I saw in comparable densities was the African Grass Blue in Furteventura. Even at 4.30 pm, males were descending on recently unfurled wings from the steep back-wall at the top of the reserve. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So how many Dukes were flying over Heyshott Escarpment today? I generally prefer not to estimate or extrapolate, but it is important to record, even imprecisely, the unprecedented recovery of the Duke of Burgundy, on a site where it had come so perilously close to extinction. Today there were at least 200 Dukes on these remarkable slopes. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Everyone who has played a part in the conservation work at this Murray Downland Trust reserve should feel very proud of what has been achieved here. I would like to think that the late Betty Murray (<a href="http://murraydownlandtrust.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/dedication.html">http://murraydownlandtrust.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/dedication.html</a>) is looking down on proceedings with an approving eye.</div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Despite the early forecast of variable and cloudy conditions we need not have worried as the coats were soon off as I led a party of 20 members of the Haslemere Natural History Society around the fabulous Heyshott Escarpment reserve earlier today, Saturday, 14th May. Located due east of the village of Cocking and just south of the village of Heyshott in West Sussex, this wonderful downland reserve is the jewel in the crown of the Murray Downland Trust; its riches being revealed in some plentitude today.</span></div>

In addition and further to Neil Hulme’s walk on Sunday, 8th May when, referring to the Duke of Burgundy at Heyshott, he reported, </span><i><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“follo</span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">wing several false starts, it appears that this species might now be colonising the western flank”</span></i><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">, we too found a single female prospecting this area of the reserve. <span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Our Wednesday morning work parties have been spent clearing more wood from the slopes. We anticipate another good year for the Duke of Burgundy butterfly as a reward for the hundreds of volunteer hours spent cutting, clearing and burning of the scrub and wood. We often have wonderful views over the Downs and yesterday was no exception, although not as good as those enjoyed by the three buzzards that wheeled overhead. Cuckoo Flowers (Lady's Smock) have emerged on the bank by the main path and Primroses have been in flower for a few weeks.</span></div>

The cutting, strimming, heaving, raking and burning has been done. On behalf of both the Murray Downland Trust and Butterfly Conservation, I would like to say "thank you" to everyone who has given so generously of their time, and for their relentless enthusiasm.<br />

<br />
A huge amount has been achieved and the Heyshott Escarpment reserve has not looked better since long back in the 20th Century. A varied mosaic of different habitat types, at different stages of vegetative succession, now awaits the appearance (and appreciation) of Heyshott's butterflies, and a wide range of other fauna and flora.<br />
<br />
We have it all; open chalk grassland, scrubbier areas of different age groups, scalloped woodland edges, and small blocks of Beech, Ash and Yew. I am more excited than ever by the prospects for another season here.<br />
<br />
Following an autumn phase of wider scrub control, most effort has been directed at clearing a 0.5 hectare area of dense coppice and secondary woodland in Compartment 10. The steep, hummocky topography revealed for the first time in many decades, leading down to a newly fashioned, 'soft' woodland edge, has created a future hotspot, in both senses.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3Y-4mlswV_wpPy0QPQp-ojeYPQfw1GHT90fwuwdwuzze1zgUrYG3wJDlOTTOwL8FUSLeOmOCcUaZdCZ_ICvS4zyDcwNOVAHeaxAkc2NQ8_wjFgZJn345T2zAqK7neRBpl_3d3NxSiMcA5/s1600/MDT+Clearance+at+Heyshott+Escarpment+25.3.15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3Y-4mlswV_wpPy0QPQp-ojeYPQfw1GHT90fwuwdwuzze1zgUrYG3wJDlOTTOwL8FUSLeOmOCcUaZdCZ_ICvS4zyDcwNOVAHeaxAkc2NQ8_wjFgZJn345T2zAqK7neRBpl_3d3NxSiMcA5/s1600/MDT+Clearance+at+Heyshott+Escarpment+25.3.15.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Sheltered from the elements on four sides, the temperature rises here quickly, as soon as the sun shines. The butterflies and many other invertebrates are going to love it! I foresee trouble. Both the Duke of Burgundy and Pearl-bordered Fritillary will want to command this space. Given the highly pugnacious nature of the male 'Duke', violence is inevitable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQhX7sXo7JicFU3rZKGy6c2Yf4_ODx1nwpXdBkrQlW4Gzes-ajh5Qrh6TQ6iJQeep_paRGMz9D6hacaEWVrlv5JonzNt_0D9Rbwv-ftpVBF69iPbtwIDbDvjATAupPiaCIa7nlTmMJeS8_/s1600/MDT+Raking+up+at+Heyshott+Escarpment+25.3.15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQhX7sXo7JicFU3rZKGy6c2Yf4_ODx1nwpXdBkrQlW4Gzes-ajh5Qrh6TQ6iJQeep_paRGMz9D6hacaEWVrlv5JonzNt_0D9Rbwv-ftpVBF69iPbtwIDbDvjATAupPiaCIa7nlTmMJeS8_/s1600/MDT+Raking+up+at+Heyshott+Escarpment+25.3.15.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Primrose and Cowslip are not the only plants now bursting forth in abundance. The Common Dog-violet, food-plant of the Pearl-bordered Fritillary, is common in some areas. Despite the broadly north-facing aspect of the escarpment, the topography of humps and deep hollows also provides warmer, south-facing slopes. Where the violets grow amongst sparse vegetation and dried plant debris, ideal areas exist for the fritillary's caterpillar to develop.<br />

Both of our most common species, Cowslip (<i>P. veris</i>), and Primrose (<i>P. vulgaris</i>), are food-plants of the Duke of Burgundy butterfly's caterpillar.<br />
<br />
Cowslip is the dominant species across the open slopes, where the Duke is already thriving, but Primrose has always been typical of the more heavily wooded parts of the reserve. Both species thrive in the lowermost pit, near the 'Camel's Humps'.<br />
<br />
The extensive strip of derelict coppice and secondary woodland in the coombe, which was cleared by MDT and Butterfly Conservation volunteers a few years back, has been developing an increasingly diverse and favourable ground-flora over the last couple of seasons. Back-breaking management work with hand-tools is now being supplemented with grazing, and the recent visit by Belted Galloway cattle has certainly brought things along very nicely.<br />
<br />
Although there has always been a reasonably good flush of Primrose along the lower side of the coombe track, until this spring the cleared slope was relatively poor in this species. How things have changed!<br />
<br />
This afternoon, John Murray and I spent some time spotting the new Primrose plants which are becoming widely established above the track, particularly at the southern end of the coombe. Last spring there were few; now there are many. If the Duke of Burgundy can be tempted to use this slope as a
breeding area, we will have the species in two distinct habitat types,
and using both of its food-plants. That would bring extra security to
the population - and lead to even greater numbers. Fingers crossed! <br />

Reserve amongst the runners-up in the South Downs National Park 2014
Photographic Competition. The theme was 'Hidden Gems', and this stunning
collection of large, Bronze Age bell barrows certainly fits the bill.
Even more so, if like I was, you are ever fortunate enough to be there
when the midsummer sun sets in alignment with their linear arrangement.<br />

I
had waited for many years to see this, unhindered by cloud, but the
wait was more than worthwhile. It provided a truly magical moment, spent
in a truly magical place. Read more about this site in the earlier
article 'The Devil's Jumps and Humps'.<br />

We have been concentrating on the same area for several weeks now, and a similar effort will be required to finish this particular task.<br />
<br />
I'm very optimistic that the area we are currently clearing will become a hotspot for the Duke of Burgundy butterfly. Prior to a change in the direction of habitat management in 2007, this threatened species occurred in very low numbers (fewer than five on the best days), and all were seen in and around the small pit which can be seen behind the group of volunteers in the second image. I have often referred to this area as the Duke's 'Alamo', where it hung on tenaciously until, in this case, help arrived in time. The butterfly picked this last stronghold for a good reason; it must provide the very best conditions for the species anywhere on the hill.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8vzs0oesnjwVog8Z1ei9LH_tf_KUaLI65USPHAHFhUsxgSMwtU0BGOsFAwqXdnOFfo1_S8I0NGqe0IugwnzE_nw9q2zarLHS6thnrUy6ZYZA01sL0c1HU_5LfHeQgd35YUlNI50TrxVBB/s1600/MDT+Work+Party+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8vzs0oesnjwVog8Z1ei9LH_tf_KUaLI65USPHAHFhUsxgSMwtU0BGOsFAwqXdnOFfo1_S8I0NGqe0IugwnzE_nw9q2zarLHS6thnrUy6ZYZA01sL0c1HU_5LfHeQgd35YUlNI50TrxVBB/s1600/MDT+Work+Party+2.jpg" height="196" width="320" /></a><br />
As we are clearing the immediately adjacent areas, with similar topography and microclimate, the hope is that the Duke of Burgundy will thrive here, once suitable vegetation becomes established over the next three or four years. The restoration of 0.5 hectare of chalk grassland in this particular spot may be worth 2.0 hectares elsewhere.<br />
<br />
After achieving a great deal and heading for home, our group descended through the lowermost pit, only to be met by some new arrivals. A dozen Belted Galloways had been delivered, on transfer from the National Trust. These hardy, light-weight cattle will be tackling the regrowth of scrub and some coarser grasses over the next few weeks.<br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The work parties at Heyshott escarpment have been running since October, though we have lost quite a few days due to inclement weather. We meet mostly on Wednesday mornings when MDT and Butterfly Conservation members join forces to maintain existing habitat and create new areas for the primulas to grow. Primroses and cowslips are the foodplant of the Duke of Burgundy butterfly, which is the object of the conservation work. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Belted-Galloway-Cattle-Society-for-UK-and-Eire/166164253518161">Belted Galloway Cattle</a> were moved onto the hill for a period to graze and create the optimum grassland for primulas.</span></div>
